Milltown Limestone Quarry (United Kingdom)

Situated west of Milltown worked mainly for Limestone but also for spar and calcite. This area had been quarried since the 1880's but was latterly re-started by the Jessop family from 1911 to 1919 when the Clay Cross Co took over. The limestone produced was transported on the Ashover Light Railway once built.
The quarry ceased work in 1936 when it reached Blacklant Rake which resulted in poor quality stone contaminated by other minerals. The quarry briefly re-opened in the war in 1942 but was closed in 1946.
The quarry was worked in conjunction with the Stars Wood Mine just south of it.
Clay Cross became Biwaters who it appears started quarrying again at Milltown to the back of Stars Wood at GR SK352618 establishing a large quarry for Limestone which only ceased operation in about 2003.
