Mansfield & Pinxton Railway

Work on the railway (originally a horsedrawn tramway) was begun in 1817 and completed in 1819. It was originally meant to be used to take lime and stone from out of Mansield to the Cromford Canal at Pinxton Wharf. However, it soon provided means to carry coal in to Mansfield and local textile mills whilst also being used to carry moulding sand from Mansfield. The growth of coal leading to a number of pits forming along the line with branch lines to the main line.

In 1847 the line was taken over by the Midland Railway and due to track technology the line was relaid in 1849 to Pye Bridge. Later changes were also made to the line with the most notable being replacing the original Portland Viaduct (built in 1817 by Josias Jessop) in 1871 with a less tighter curve.

Much of the line exists today and parts are sill in use serving the local Robin Hood Line and the line between Pye Bridge and Kirkby in Ashfield

Mellors Tramway to Old Hucknall Pits (in Huthwaite). The older gangway route which the tramway generally follows originally also went to Pinxton Wharf and the later tramway (& Railway) joing the Mansfield & Pinxton line.
