The Lubin mine dates to 23 March 1957, when, during exploratory work carried out by a team led by Jan Wyzykowski from the State Geological Institute in Warsaw, the copper ore deposit was detected in the vicinity of the towns of Lubin and Sieroszowice. Based on this discovery, work began on the building of the Lubin mine on 1 January 1960. The initial task of this project, which also became the first shaft for KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., was construction of the Eastern Shaft, later renamed the Boleslaw Shaft. In March 1968 the crew working on this shaft reached the layer of the copper deposit, initiating ore extraction operations. The years which followed saw intensive work to increase the production capacity of the mine, thanks to which in December 1983 the Lubin mine celebrated the production of its millionth tonne of copper.
