Owned by Falconbridge until it's recent takeover by Xstrata plc. The mine began operation in 1966, producing copper, zinc, and other base metals. The deposit is one of the largest and richest volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the world.
The mine started as an open pit, then moved underground as it followed the orebody. The ore is sent to the nearby Kidd metallurgical plant which has a copper smelter and refinery, zinc plant, cadmium plant indium plant, sulfuric acid plant, and exploration office. Kidd's concentrating, smelting and refining processes are among the most advanced in the world.
Kidd Creek has three shafts known as the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 mines. Mine D is currently being developed to access reserves below the 6,800 foot level. This will be the deepest base metals orebody being mined in the world.
