Juneau was a booming mining town 16 years before Klondikers' gold pans filled with shiny nuggets.
Then for the next six decades the Juneau area boasted three of the world's largest gold mines -- the Alaska Juneau(cq), the Alaska Gastineau(cq) and the Treadwell(cq).
This trio of hard-rock mines produced a total of $158 million in gold, at a time when gold prices ranged from only $20 to $35(cq) an ounce.
