José Maestre Tunnel Iron Tunnel (Spain)


Located in the town of Portman, province of Murcia, South-East of Spain
Excaved in 1957 by the Sociedad Minero Metalúrgica Peñarroya to carry the iron ore that was mined in the quarry Emilia and reaching up the tunnel through a 60 m deep pit. After, the mineral traveled 2,5 Km with a narrow gauge train until to go outside and to be carried to a processing factory called Lavadero Roberto. The railroad had 6 diesel locomotives made by Deutz, Orenstein & Koppel i Gmeinder, 2-axis railway trucks that poured the load in a discharger whit a crane-bridge that bring they in the factory. The railway path was 3,7 Km long. The tunnel was in operation until 1985
