Houghall Coal Colliery (United Kingdom)


1840-1880's.

Reached the 36" Low Main in 1841 at 100ft and the 39" Hutton at 180ft.

First coals shipped in 1842, railway extended from Shincliffe Station over bridge at River Wear at bottom of Shincliffe Village to Houghall.

New owners, Joseph H Love and Partners take over in 1860's. 180 houses built for mine workers, 150 by the colliery and a further 30 in the nearby Shincliffe Village.

By the 1880's the seams had been exhausted, a boring was driven below the Hutton seam but poor quality coals were found. All but 2 rows of houses pulled down, those remaining pulled down by NCB in 1955. Area is now a forest and part of Houghall College, serving arborculture studies.
