Hope Level Fluorite Mine (United Kingdom)

Level driven to command the Four Fathom Limestone from the side of Stanhopeburn. W. B Lead Co drove the level in 1868-77 but found no workable lead ore but a wide fluorspar vein and the mine was later worked successfully for that mineral by The Weardale Steel, Coal and Coke Co (until 1932); Beeston and Johnson (1941) and Mr G M Brown. The level is open until it reaches Red Vien, it emerges in a large stope which is open for only a short distance in either direction. A good (for the northern pennines) cave system in the Four Fathom Limestone can be accessed from the level.

NOTE : This level is on private property immediately adjacent to a private home. Please respect their privacy and don't visit without prior arrangement.
