Not to be confused with Hilton Main, a much later concern.
Worked from sometime in the 1800s until 1908 by the Hilton Colliery Company Ltd of Bloxwich, it originally had nine shafts. The 1883 OS map shows a no2 site west of Sneyd Farm, and workings to the east adjacent to a canal basin which appear to be part of Essington Farm Colliery. The 1900 maps however show these workings as “Hilton Colliery”. It had its own brick works, shown on even later maps as all part of Sneyd Colliery, and eventually became the Holly Bank brick works when later still it all came under the one concern.
Today, the no 2 site is under the M6 motorway. The eastern no 1 site as I arbitrarily regard it, has an interesting small double story building I can remember well from my childhood when I used to cycle over to there from my home in Bloxwich. Its shown on the 1883 map.
