Heights Limestone Quarry (United Kingdom)


Quarry in the Carboniferous Great Limestone near the village of Westgate in Weardale. In its early days it was worked to provide limestone for use as a flux in the steelmaking industry and its product was shipped out by rail to iron works such as those at Cargofleet.
The quarry is now owned by Aggregate Industries and is one of only two still operating in the dale, it now produces aggregates mainly for roadstone.
