Driven in 1892 as an adit or foot ridd, from the bank of the River Severn by Joseph Exley to supply his new Coalport Tileries (where the modern water treatment works is now). Clay also taken to Exley's Jackfield works. The mine was abandoned in 1956. Until recently a wooden windlass survived in the hedge (on top of the hill) over a shaft about 400m in from the entrance.
