Foxfield colliery at Dilhorne was in operation from 1880-1965.The mine is situated in the Cheadle coalfield, where coal mining is thought to have been active since the seventeenth century.
Work started on sinking the first shaft in 1880 ultimately reaching 752ft in depth, it completed in 1888. A second shaft was later sunk later to 1000 feet deep. The colliery finally closed in 1965. Sometime around 1946, the mine had 390 men underground and 150 at surface.
