Elsecar New Colliery was much deeper than those previously sunk in the area and so a Newcomen Beam Engine was built to extract water from the mine, allowing the exploitation of deeper coal seams. It ran from 1795 until 1923 when it was replaced with electric pumps.
The engine house is complete with the engine still inside and is the only Newcomen engine still in its original house where installed in the UK.
