The main colliery site was on the north side of the railway, although today very little or nothing is seen of the colliery site. The railway is still there as an embankment. On the other side of the railway (SE34410 0866) are the remains of the old fan shaft and fan house. The listing on English Heritage has this site has being a Scheduled Monument at risk http://risk.english-heritage.org.uk/register.aspx?id=4585&rt=3&pn=1&st=a&ctype=all&crit=east+gawber />There is also a brief description of the later use of this site being a fanhouse for East Gawber Hall / Wharncliffe Carlton by mean of a Guibal Fan http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=1148560&sort=4&search=all&criteria=north%20carlton&rational=q&recordsperpage=60 />However, the size of the chimney walls, the 'apparent' lack of use between 1850s and 1870s and references on old mine plans show this shaft and structure was originally a furnace (cupola) ventilation shaft. The site is a small compact area, and likely to have buried structures, but the site is used by bikes (cycles) as a jump course, There are also a number of old bricks laying around the site and parts of the chimney walls have lost a number of bricks.I think this site is a little bit more rarer than some folks might think and could do with some preservation works etc.
