Doe Lea Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

This mine was located at Doe Lea in Derbyshire and was in the V of the M1 motorway slip road and the A617 to Mansfield at Junction 29.
The mine operated from 1931 to 1994. There were originally two drifts on the North end of the mine but these were abandoned soon after 1956 when a new drift was sunk at the South end of the site. The first 200 yards of the drift were at 1 in 3 and then more shallow for the 700 yards to pit bottom. The method of working was pillar and stall with coal being shot fired and hand shovelled into tubs.
