Deereenalomane Baryte Mine (Ireland)


Deereenalomane copper and Barytes mine(1843-1920. Situated on the mines road between durrus and Ballydehob. Originally worked as a copper mine, then migrated downslope as a mine with 4 shafts and adits on four levels down to approx. 90 fathoms. Employed up to 500 people. Had an aerial ropeway 1.23miles long down to a pier in Dunmanus bay. Baryte was shipped out and coal shipped in. Produced up to 6500 tons per year at peak. Very little left to see, The site is extensively overgrown, the early workings reputedly collapsed and the shafts largely filled in.
