Dawson Coal Mine (Australia)


Major open-cut coal mine using draglines near Mora in central Queensland, owned by AngloAmerican in joint venture with Mitsui Coal. The mine has been in operation since 1958. The mine was the first to export coal to Japan from Queensland (1963). The mine is on the site of the earlier Kianga and Moura underground operations where there were several major disasters; Kianga 20/9/1975 13 miners killed, Moura No. 4 16/7/1986 12 miners killed and Moura No. 2 7/8/1994 11 miners killed.
