Christmas Island Phosphate Other Rock Mine (Australia)

If not for the island's extensive phosphate deposits, there might never have been a permanent human presence here. Phosphate has been mined on the island for more than 100 years.
[url]http://www.abc.net.au/nature/island/ep2/map/mine.htm[/url] />Phosphate mining had been the only significant economic activity on the island, but in December 1987 the Australian Government closed the mine. In 1991, the mine was reopened by a consortium which included many of the former mine workers as shareholders.
