The mine was originally a shaft mine having its origins prior to 1886. Coal for use in manufacturing was mined from the Halifax Hard and Soft Seams as was Fireclay. Ganister was also worked from a nearby quarry. The mine was being operated by General Refractories Ltd in 1937 with 16 underground and 4 at surface. Post Jan 1947 the mine whilst becoming NCB continued under licence to General Refractories as a small mine. At this point production was up and 62 were underground and 4 at surface. The mines shaft operations were thought to have stopped by this time as the mine was listed as 'School Wells drift'. The mine continued until around 1957 when it was closed.
