This pit (actually two pits) was worked in the Lower Chalk, primarily for lime. There was an extensive narrow gauge railway system. Lime-burning fizzled out in the 1960s. Some novel kiln designs were tried with varying degrees of success. The surviving kilns are protected monuments and are also recognised bat hibernaculae. The grid reference is for the surviving kilns.
A hearthstone mine lies directly beneath the kilns and part of the pit.
