Started as "Air Shaft and Mary Pit" but became a Mine in its own right, it was nevertheless a continuation of The Beamish 2nd Pit. The 2nd Pit was originally situated near the entrance to Beamish Open Air Museum ( www.beamish.org.uk )The remains of that Mine were removed Brick by Brick to The actual Museum, That former site is now a the park.
Beamish Mary was situated further west from The 2nd Pit along the former Wagon Way heading toward Tanfield closed in the 1960s and the site has since been landscaped, though a vague outline remains, This mine was heavily updated by the NCB (along with nearby Handonhold Colliery) and one of the 1st in the North East to feature Skip winding, however somehow it still closed.
