Backshot Coal Mine (United Kingdom)


This mine was located at the extreme Nth West end of Forth to the north of Carstairs. Date of opening is not known however we know from the 1970's the mine was owned by A. Maxwell & Co Ltd who operated the nearby Abbey Mine. The Wilson Townmain seam was worked and substantial amounts of coal won. 40 people worked there in 1992 producing 312 tubs of coal per shift with haulage from the single drift by electric engine. The mine had closed by September 1998 by which time the adit was filled and track lifted, some buildings did remain however but are now long since gone.
