Tin mineralisation is hosted by a roof pendant of Hodgkinson Formation sedimentary rocks within a granitic intrusion. The sequence is intruded by a porphyry sill (the UNA Sill). Tin mineralisation, of which approximately 80% is present as cassiterite and 20% as stannite, occurs in faults, fractures and joints. Tin has been the focus of the Baal Gammon area datingback to the 1930s when the United Northern Australian battery operated at the site. From 1979 to 1985, Great Northern Mining Corporation NL entered into a number of exploration joint ventures with a consortium managed by Newmont Holdings Pty Ltd. During this period, the main exploration focus was the United Northern Australia or UNA area (now referred to as Baal Gammon). Newmont Holdings Pty Ltd reported a resource of 1.3 Mt at 1.24% Cu, 0.31% Sn and 45.8 g /t Ag. An additional 1.2 Mt at 0.31% Cu and 0.18% Sn could have been mined with the overlying waste in the planned pit area. Metallurgical testing indicated that a recovery rate of 24% would be achieved. Great Northern Mining Corporation NL continued to develop and exploit known tin deposits in the area using Walkerminco Pty Ltd’s database. The company reported a large stockwork system containing tin, silver and copper mineralisation at Baal Gammon with an indicated reserve of 3 Mt at 1.2% Cu, 46 g/t Ag 0.3% Sn and 50 g/t In. In 2006, North Queensland Metals Ltd commenced a feasibility study to re-evaluate the Baal Gammon deposit. A resource estimate was calculated and baseline environmental studies and preliminary evaluation work commenced. In 2008, North Queensland Metals Ltd reported probable ore reserve of 3.3 Mt at grade of 0.93% Cu, 0.2% Sn, 32.04 g/t Ag and 29.31 g/t In.The mine is expected to process 500 000 t over a seven year mine life to produce ~20 000 t of Cu-Sn-Ag-In concentrate per year. Not to be confused with a mine of the same name in New South Wales.
