B & H Gold Mine (United States)

Gold was allegedly discovered in the South Pass area in 1842 by a trapper working for the American Fur Company. According to an article in the Sweetwater Miner, March 24, 1869, the trapper was killed by Indians before he could organize mining activities. A "gold rush" did not occur until July, 1867 when newspaper accounts picked up the discovery of the Carissa Lode.
