The mine worked an unnamed coal & ganister / fireclay seam situated between the Ashover Grit & Chatsworth Grit. The mine supplied coal via a tramway to the Meerbrook Lead Smelter by the River Derwent. It also supplied the pipe works below the colliery site. The colliery closed c1905

It was while searching through old records and maps that Wirksworth Mines Research Group noted a shaft in the Alderwasley area. Further investigation revealed that the shaft was part of a coal-ganister-fireclay mine that fed a brick works in the near locality.
The mine, abandoned since the turn of the century, consisted of an adit now collapsed at its entrance and the two shafts. The first shaft, some one metre's in diameter and 20 metre's deep, fell directly into the adit some 100 metre's from the entrance. The second shaft, 800 metre's from the adit entrance, was totally filled in the 1940's and only a small surface depression reveals it's existence....by Paul Barsby
