Should you find yourself in Cornwall, just give me a shout and I can arrange a couple of good ones including some interesting little 'walk-ins' which would suit all skills. One of them so easy you could take your granny in
Just post your itinerary when you get it sorted and we'll keep a pasty hot for you. 😉

Sounds good to me Roy, thanks!

I will probably stay a night of two in the Quarrymans but will have to check out The Hunters Lodge

OK it looks like we are looking at lodgings for two nights in Wadhurst East Sussex, two to three nights in Penzance Cornwall, two to three nights at the Quarrymans Arms in Wiltshire, two nights around Telford Shropshire, three nights around Newcastle upon Tyne, two nights around Daventry, and three nights around London.
Each spot is going to be base camp for anything in that area as far as visits and such and driving 2-3 hours for an afternoon of something great is cool with us.

Hi Greykat,

If your going to Newcastle then you are a stones throw away from Nenthead, well about an hours drive. Its the mine exploration mecca of the North Pennines.

Just look up Smallcleugh, Rampgill, Caplecleugh mines on the database / google for an idea of what there is!

If you have time visit the St. Just Mining District, I can arrange a trip or two, no problem. Also see St. Just mines research group on the www.

At Wadhurst you are some distance from the Surrey sites - perhaps the best part of an hour's drive. But you are within minutes of Sussex's only accessible iron mine (all mines bar this one were just pits sunk to the ironstone with no side galleries). However, the mine is on forestry land, and access is only possible via Kent Underground Research Group, who though willing, will require notice of the visit and probably need to inform the forestry people. You can see all the site easily in less than an hour. (Snape Wood - see the mines index). Let me know if you are interested and I will give you a contact. You might be better off leaving any Surrey visits until you are in London, though it does depend on where you are going to be based as to how easy it is to get out of town. If you are into industrial history, and have the time, try to visit the Kew Bridge Steam Museum to see the largest collection of working Cornish engines in Britain, the Science Museum to see a number of very early engines - atmospheric, Watt, and a Trevithick machine, and the famous Rocket locomotive (it's free as well). There's plenty more to see of course, but you have to leave some hours for the usual rubbish like Buck House, HofP, Westminster Abbey bla bla bla. 🙂

I did notice it was going on Moorebooks but would rather see the mines & caves and have the bonus of meeting the people willing to host a trip or two or point us in the right directions for permissions. Its way more fun to share stories over a cold frothy one in the pub fresh out of a mine/cave than in a convention hall IMO. I was in a movie about exploring that was done not too long ago and failed to show up to a single one of the showings because I was out exploring when they had the get togethers!

Thanks for the contact info Roy, Im very interested in meeting up and checking out some of the places you mentioned. I would have PM'd you back but the site admin hasnt enabled that yet for me (hint hint admin!).

Mr Mike - We have so much planned for the Newcastle area already but thanks for the leads they look sweet! If we get time I will be in touch if thats ok with you.

Colin - I checked out that site, cool stuff! You, Roy and I should get together while Im in Cornwall.

Peter - I'm interested! If you suggest holding off on Surrey sites until we are staying in London then thats what I will plan. I would really like to see some of the locations you mentioned.

Clunk - would you be willing on meeting up while we are staying at the Quarrymans or would anyone like to meet at the pub and go for a walk about? I've poured over the maps and routes and it looks great. I would love to setup a shot of someonecoming down on rope at that opening in the cathedral room! I love doing photography so setting up and shooting features like that gets me going!
