Hi,

I've been doing loads of research into the pits in the area surrounding Tibshelf and have seen a fair bit about the accident at the Drum & Monkey. Being from the area I know the locations of a fair few of the local collieries but the exact location of the Drum & Monkey remains a mystery to me. I've been given various different locations by locals, family and friends but can't be 100% certain. Can anyone provide a definitive answer for me please?

Cheers.

This is the only information I can find also.

I've been told by a few people that it was to the west of the village, approximately where Saw Pit Lane now crosses the M1 motorway but that doesn't match this information as the bottom end of the village borders Newton. There are numerous old shafts in that area but no sign of The Drum & Monkey Inn...

I seem to recall (about 50 years ago) the locals talking about the Drum & Monkey being near the junction of Saw Pit lane and the Tibby / Teversal road ( this is before the M1!)

Hi Keith,

The site off of Newtonwood Lane visible from the motorway bridge is Diminsdale Colliery operated by the Chambers family (Diminsdale Colliery Co.) from The Hurst (now Hurst Farm) in Tibshelf. Like you say, the same company operated the Chambers Dunsil Colliery just down from Red Barn Farm in Newton.

My uncle seems to think it was somewhere on Saw Pit Lane but closer to Tibshelf Bottom Pit than the Top Pit and the main Teversal road. He also seems to think that the Drum & Monkey Inn was in Newton at the top of Littlemoor Lane next to the bridge over the railway cutting. The old O/S maps show a decent sized building standing where the bungalows are now but it was demolished in the early twentieth century.

Ok, I have spoken to an ex Senior NCB surveyor re this who is an expert on the area, and he believes that Dimminsdale is 99% likely to be Drum And Monkey and understands it to be the location given... the reason the name is not on the listings is it was always just a 'nick name'...

This was the Pub, Not the pit.

Presumably the pub gave rise to the nickname of the pit?

Hi Keith,

The marker near the motorway bridge on Saw Pit Lane is the location I have been given by a couple of people for the Drum & Monkey. It's also shown on the 1879 O/S maps as an abandoned colliery site not far from Marlpits Cottages (which is now under Tibshelf Services).

The locals all seem to think that it was separate to Diminsdale, though owned by the Chambers family and abandoned much earlier, possibly around 1840.

Yes, the building on the old O/S maps that I'm presuming was the Drum & Monkey inn looks to have been demolished at some point between 1921 and 1938.

It'd be nice to get some photos of the area around the time. I'm sure some must exist somewhere. 🙂

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
