Hello,

Have just joined on here. Am interested in swapping information, dates, map & surveys, locations on:
A) Purbeck stone quarrs (as detail on this area is very hard to come by & surveys almost non-existent).
B) Bath stone quarries (having visited this area many times)

There are over 300 of these quarrs (that I have traced so far) & 20+ are open.

Hi, I'm in Bath, and might know something you don't? i don't know a lot about Purbeck, but have seen your reports on DP, and it looks very interesting!

Well familiar with Box, Ridge, Browns, Monkton Farleigh etc. but plenty that way I know very little about - Coombe, Brewer's Yard, Dapstone etc: never been in those.

I found a way into 3 abandoned cellars from the street in Bath itself a few years ago - that's an area bound to hide many more amongst the 1000s I'm certain!

I havn't done box yet. I know Bathampton down quite well. There are a few small underground workings there, I also know quite alot about existing surface features at combe down, but most of the workings are filled now, there are some bits left unfilled but access is currently unavailable. Those callers sound interesting, did they connect to the network of tunnels?

Sorry for taking so longto reply - had no idea youd replied! The cellars were 1 or 2 rooms & appeared abandoned or sealed off from the buildings above. One you could get into via a small square hole by a bridge.
Not aware of any of them joining up to any larger set of tunnels - do you mean the covered alleyways alongside roads or the Roman stuff?

That's Ok. I think the covered alleyways and roman stuff may all be connected, my uncle was the night watchman many years ago, and I remember his stories about patrolling them. Bath must be riddled with tunnels and voids, due to it being so built up above the flood plain. I think I know which hole on a bridge you are referring to, near the sportscentre? There used to be a door not too far from there, in the rugby ground that accessed cellars also. I've even read that Samuel Beckford had a tunnel from his tower in landsdown to the town centre! I'm trying to find out any information about the seven sisters quarry at Bathampton down, as it was reputed to be on the scale of combe down?

That square hole is on a fairly main road but I wouldn't remember where unless I saw it again. But maybe it s the same, it was pretty unmissable, surprised it's not barred.

Am inclined to look for maps of underground Bath to see detail there is to find!
